Training on Mine sites rehabilitation and risk assessment |

The Albanian Hot Spot project organized as part of the capacity development component of the project a training on Mines Rehabilitation and Risk Assessment held on December 7th – 11th 2009, in Tirana, Albania.
Participants in the Mines rehabilitation and risk assessment training were representatives from the Institute of Public Health, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Energy, Regional Environmental Agencies and the Agency for Natural Resources. As a result of regional cooperation, knowledge exchange and networking, with the support of Regional PMU, the trainings were attended by the participants from the Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Economy from FYR Macedonia. The specific topics covered at the training were: hazards in copper mining, elimination of dust, pollution from mine waters, mining waste, public participation in environmental matters, impact on human health, risk assessment on contaminated sites. The Conceptual Site Model was introduced along with the relevant legislation and best practices currently used in managing contaminated sites investigation and development. Examples of chromium sites in Glasgow, with particulars details on SEA and EIA were presented. At the proposal of the consultants and due to the interest of the participants an additional session on the new area of Medical Geology was included in the agenda. Future legislation was also discussed along with specific relevance to the regional mining industry sector, with examples from accession or pre accession countries.
