rreshen_tailing_custom.jpgRreshen tailing - The site is located near the Municipality of Rreshen, situated in the Northern Mirdita District, Lezhe Region. The site is located near the Motorway Merdare Morine and close to Fani River. The complete mine tailing surface is 25,451 m2. It is located about 130 m above the sea level.

The decommissioned tailings facilities at Reps and Rreshen were subject to a rapid assessment in 2008 by UNEP/Grid Arendal and UNDP Albania which found them to be in poor condition in relation to Tailings Facility Management (TMF). The main risks being the continuing loss of tailings materials into the watershed and the continued degradation of the tailings dam structures which threaten to eventually cause complete failure of the main dam wall which would result in the mass loss of mine tailings materials downstream and to a significant pollution of the Small Fani river. Emergency works to replace the failed water diversion structures to cease losses of tailings materials and leachate to the river and protect the structural integrity of the Reps and Rreshen mine tailings facilities is of great environmental importance and is therefore the subject of the works proposed in this project.

Balez chemical storage house PDF

balez2_013_custom.jpgBalez chemical storage house – The site is located in a small village called Balez 5 km north of Elbasan city. Balez chemical storage house is containing approximately 140 tonnes of mixed chemical wastes collected from a number of other temporary stockpiles. The store is managed on behalf of the METE by NFI Meniera Company (NFIM). Materials from institutions under the control of other ministries (e.g. the Ministry of Health) have also been sent to the store. The store contains several buildings, one of which is in good condition but others are not so. The site is permanently managed and guarded, however it is close to residential properties and a school, close to a tributary of the Skumbini River and therefore represents a potential hazard.

Bajza, Shkoder/Skadar PDF

bajza_map.jpgStockpile of toxic chemicals at Bajza Railway Station, Shkoder - Currently, estimated 200 tons of expired pesticides and other chemicals are being stored more than 15 years ago at the railway station in Bajza. The letter from the local community to the Albanian Minister of Environment, Forestry and Water Administration indicated that expired pesticides like: rrogor, vofatox, nogos, selinon, novakrom, spitsornit, 2-4 D, fugorat, sevin, lindan, etc. formed a part of the bulk and has been added by other unknown chemicals and other products like pieces of leather.
Bajza is the last railway station in Albania before the frontier with Montenegro, so it acts as a customs control point. Two freight trains daily pass through and approximately 10,000 tons of freight are handled each month. The station is located at the shore of trans-boundary Shkoder (Skadar) Lake – the largest lake on the Balkan Peninsula that both Albania and Montenegro have officially designated as cross-border protected area. With the designation of Albanian part of the Shkoder (Skadar) Lake as a Ramsar site the entire lake is now included in a Ramsar list.

The proposed intervention under this programme will aim to fully clean up the stockpile of toxic chemicals and remediate the hot spot enabling the local government and Bajza rail way station to utilize the rehabilitated storehouse and improve environmental situation in the area.
